Ku-band Shared-Aperture Air-Dielectric Thin-Film Phased Array Antenna

The TX/RX shared aperture antenna is developed in-house on Stardl’s satellite communication phased array development platform. It works in Ku band. The antenna assembly includes radome, antenna membrane, air supports, RF printed circuit board, and back cavity. With real-time FPGA computing, it quickly configures the amplitude and phase of each antenna element to form the required beam pointing in real time.

  • TX/RX shared aperture – reduces antenna size.
  • Air dielectric membrane antenna technology – higher efficiency.

Product Overview

This Ku-band shared-aperture air-dielectric thin-film phased array antenna is developed by Stardl based on an advanced phased array platform with FPGA-based real-time beamforming control. The system integrates radome, thin-film antenna elements, air-support structure, RF PCB, and back cavity into a highly compact architecture. Each antenna element’s amplitude and phase are dynamically controlled to enable real-time beam steering and stable satellite tracking performance, making it suitable for lightweight mobile SATCOM terminals. The shared transmit/receive aperture architecture significantly reduces system size while maintaining high RF efficiency and integration capability.

FAQ

What is the main advantage of a shared-aperture antenna?
A shared-aperture design allows transmit and receive functions to operate on the same antenna surface, reducing overall system size while maintaining stable RF performance and efficient beam control.
How does Stardl’s FPGA beamforming improve performance?
Stardl’s FPGA-based beamforming enables real-time control of amplitude and phase for each antenna element, ensuring fast beam steering and stable satellite tracking in mobile environments.
Why use air-dielectric thin-film technology?
Air-dielectric structures reduce RF signal loss and improve antenna efficiency compared to conventional dielectric materials, making the system lighter and more suitable for compact SATCOM terminals.
What applications is this antenna designed for?
It is designed for portable satellite terminals, vehicle-mounted SATCOM systems, and lightweight mobile communication platforms requiring high-efficiency Ku-band connectivity.
Can this antenna be integrated into larger systems?
Yes. The modular architecture allows integration into larger phased array systems or deployment as a standalone compact antenna module.
